Concrete for Airports

Airports are critical infrastructures where the quality of runway, taxiway, and apron pavements directly impacts the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations. Due to its superior durability and strength, concrete plays a pivotal role in constructing dependable airport runways.

While traditional concrete offers substantial benefits, it also has limitations, particularly its inherent brittleness and susceptibility to cracking. To counter these issues, the addition of synthetic fibers has often become necessary in modern runway concrete applications to enhance its tensile and flexural strength.

Concrete Runway Properties

Several properties must be considered when designing a concrete runway to ensure safety, durability, and performance, including:

  • Thickness: The thickness of a concrete runway generally ranges from 6 inches to 11 inches or more, depending on the expected load and soil conditions. Factors influencing thickness include aircraft type and weight, frequency of use, and subgrade soil strength.
  • Strength: Concrete for airport pavement should have a minimum compressive strength of 6500 pounds per square inch (psi). Higher strengths may be required for heavier aircraft. Adequate flexural strength of about 650 psi is also necessary to resist cracking under load.
  • Durability: Concrete must withstand freeze-thaw cycles, deicing chemicals, and other environmental factors. Low water absorption rates also help prevent damage from moisture infiltration.
  • Surface texture: The surface should provide adequate friction to prevent skidding during takeoff and landing.
  • Joint design: Proper joint spacing and design are crucial to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction while minimizing cracking.
  • Subgrade preparation: A well-prepared subgrade is essential for load distribution and stability.

Why Use Fiber-Reinforced Concrete for Runways?

Fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) offers a range of benefits that enhance concrete’s structural integrity and durability for runways. These include:

  • Improved load distribution: FORTA’s fiber products help distribute loads more evenly across the concrete, reducing stress concentrations and the risk of cracking.
  • Enhanced durability: FRC resists bending and crack formation better than traditional concrete, extending the pavement’s service life under the mechanical stresses imposed by heavy aircraft landing and taking off.
  • Reduced maintenance needs: Including fibers minimizes the need for frequent repairs and maintenance, making FRC a cost-effective solution for busy airports.
  • Reduced permeability: Fibers help reduce the permeability of concrete, minimizing water infiltration and protecting against freeze-thaw cycles and chemicals.
  • Cost efficiency: While fiber addition may initially increase material costs, long-term benefits, including reduced maintenance costs, extended life span, and improved performance, can lead to overall cost savings.
