What Is Fiber Reinforcement for Concrete?

Fiber-reinforced concrete, or fiber mesh concrete, is a composite material that incorporates dispersed, randomly oriented fibers within the concrete mix. These fibers can be made from carbon or stainless steel, synthetic materials such as polypropylene or nylon, glass, or natural materials like cellulose or sisal. Their integration significantly improves the concrete’s structural properties. 

The effectiveness of these fibers as concrete reinforcement depends on their inherent physical properties, such as tensile strength and elastic modulus. Other relevant properties include their length, cross-sectional shape, and configuration — monofilament, fibrillated, crimped, or bent. These factors influence how well the fibers improve the concrete’s structural performance.
